On August 2 at around 10:45 p.m. law enforcement was investigating an illegal drug trade at the Seven Corners Shopping Center when they saw Jeffrey Payne, 41, facilitate the drug sale, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
Officers said Payne arrived at the shopping center in an Acura MDX with another man, Maurice Minor, 29, in the passenger seat.
Upon the officers' attempt to stop Payne's Acura, Payne drove away recklessly to avoid police, authorities reported.
Law enforcement said they immobilized the car and when the suspects ignored repeated commands, one officer shot Payne in the upper body, police said.
After Payne was treated for non-life threatening injuries, he was held at the Adult Detention Center and charged possession with intent to distribute a schedule I and II drug, authorities said.
Minor was charged with possession with intent to distribute a schedule I and II drug, police said.
The unidentified officer who shot Payne was described as an 11-year veteran and was placed on administrative leave per department policy, officials said.
